In early June, 2015 at the Association of Ontario Health Centres conference, the Guelph Community Health Centre staff and volunteers were the recipients of a well deserved awards. Our Physiotherapy Program won the Health Equity Award for excellence and innovation in addressing issues of health equity through innovated programs or non traditional partnerships.
In this unique program, physiotherapists provide free physiotherapy to Guelph Community Health Centre clients who would otherwise be unable to access it due to barriers or lack of health coverage. Many of the team of volunteer therapists, including Tegan Vermey, who was instrumental in the development of the program, Stephanie Cherry, Denise Mortley, Karina Cranston, and Nichole StieberSze along with Karrie Cumming, Guelph CHC health promoter, were able to attend the awards ceremony to receive the honours and celebrate the impressive success of the program. The outcomes from this program have been excellent, both from a physical health standpoint but also in our clients sense of empowerment over their own health.
